Ayaka Kamei left her homeland Japan at the age of 15 to study at ballet schools in Canada, San Francisco, and Cannes, where she discovered contemporary dance as her form of expression.
Her professional career began in 2010 with a six-year engagement at the Noism Company Niigata in Japan. In 2016, she moved to Germany and danced for eight years with the Dance Company Theater Osnabrück.
Inspired by working with choreographers such as Rainer Behr, Fernando Suels Mendoza (both Pina Bausch dancers), Maciej Kuźmiński, or Adi Salant (Batsheva Company), she developed her own dance language.
Since 2024 she is a freelance dancer and choreographer, and Dynamic Phrasing teacher certified twice in 2024 and 2025.
Her current engagements include performing as a dancer and choreographer in the opera Madama Butterfly with the Berliner Philharmoniker in Germany, participating as a dancer in the NHK Ballet Festival in Japan, and working as a choreographic assistant for Cantos, a commissioned work by Maciej Kuźmiński in collaboration with Hessisches Staatsballett in Germany.
In addition, she leads workshops worldwide for diverse institutions and works as a guest teacher for professional dance companies. She shares the wide-ranging skills and knowledge gained through her experience, adapting her teaching to meet the varied needs of participants.
